Description
Demolition of the former Song School and construction of a new Heritage Learning Centre (HLC), consisting of two levels below ground and two upper storeys as an extension to the existing Cathedral. The construction of the HLC, sympathetically designed to complement the Grade II* listed building, provides much needed space for education, exhibitions, and community engagement, within this remarkable addition to the Cathedral.
The project included re-ordering works to the Cathedral including relocating the font to the Great South Aisle, completely replacing all building services and improving accessibility, including forming un-stepped access at north and south doors, replacing the floor to create un-stepped access and to provide services routes, heating and a more attractive and robust stone floor finish, providing accessible draft lobbies to the main doors, forming a new doorway to the HLC extension from the Great South Aisle, repairing some stonework and blown plaster at high level, enhancing access to the tower and maintenance access to some roofs, completely redecorating the interior, new lighting, and extending the 2015 AV system.
